Will this refrigerator fit my space?
Four numbers and one walk through the house. Here's how to know before the truck shows up.

Short answer: measure the opening at its narrowest point, then leave the clearances the maker asks for: roughly ⅛ to ½ in at each side, ½ to 1 in on top and ½ to 2 in behind, depending on the guide.[1 2 · Oct 29, 2026] Leave extra width beside the hinge if a wall or tall cabinet is next to the door,[1 3 · Oct 29, 2026] and compare what's left with the fridge's width, its height to the top of the hinge, and its depth.[2 · Oct 29, 2026]
Measure the space
- Width: measure side to side, wall to cabinet or cabinet to cabinet.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] Measure at the countertop, under the upper cabinets and at the base if there's molding, and use the smallest number.[2 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Height: measure from the floor to the bottom of the cabinets above.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] Compare it with the fridge's height to the top of the hinge, which is taller than the cabinet itself: on one French door example in LG's guide it's 70¼ in to the hinge and 68⅞ in to the case.[2 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Depth: measure from the back wall forward to the front edge of the countertop.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] A fridge deeper than that will stand out past the counters.
- Note every depth number on the spec sheet: with and without doors, with and without handles, with a door open at 90° and with the doors and drawers fully open.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
Leave room to breathe
Makers ask for small gaps so the fridge can vent heat. LG warns that skipping them can hurt performance and possibly even cause a fire;[2 · Oct 29, 2026] Whirlpool says the fridge may use more energy than necessary and become damaged.[1 · Oct 29, 2026] The two guides don't agree on the exact numbers:
| Maker's guide | Each side | Top | Back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool refrigerator size guide[1 · Oct 29, 2026] | ½ in | ½ in | ½ in in its measuring step; “at least one inch” in an earlier step |
| LG refrigeration install guide (most models)[2 · Oct 29, 2026] | ⅛ in | 1 in | 2 in |
| What our checker uses (the larger of the two) | ½ in | 1 in | 2 in |
Check the door swing
- Wall or tall cabinet on the hinge side: Whirlpool suggests leaving 2½ in;[1 · Oct 29, 2026] Samsung asks for 3½ in of extra width so the doors can open fully.[3 · Oct 29, 2026]
- Island or table in front: doors and drawers need room to open. Whirlpool puts typical depth with doors open at about 45 in for French door and side-by-side models and about 50 in for bottom-freezer models, measured from the wall.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]
Worked example (our arithmetic)
A 36 in wide, 70 in tall opening with no wall beside it leaves room for a fridge up to 35 in wide and 69 in to the hinge using the cautious clearances above. LG's 35¾ in wide French door example would not fit on those numbers, but it would fit exactly using LG's own ⅛ in side gaps (35¾ + ¼ = 36 in), while its 70¼ in hinge height is too tall for a 70 in opening either way.[2 · Oct 29, 2026] That's why the exact model's installation guide has the final say.
Then check the way in
