Counter-depth refrigerator dimensions
The built-in look without the built-in price. Here's how much depth you really save.

Short answer: most counter-depth refrigerators are about 24 to 30 in deep (not counting handles), versus 31 to 36 in for standard-depth models. To make up the lost space they tend to be wider (often about 36 in) and tall, and they hold less.[1 2 · Oct 23, 2026]
Counter-depth vs standard-depth at a glance
| Measurement | Counter-depth | Standard-depth |
|---|---|---|
| Depth | about 24 to 30 in (case alone often 23 to 27 in) | about 31 to 36 in |
| Width | often about 36 in | 28¾ to 39¾ in |
| Height | about 61 to 72 in | 61¾ to 71¼ in |
| Capacity | about 15 to 25 cu ft | about 20 to 25 cu ft |
| Sticks out past a 25 in counter | usually an inch or two (doors and handles) | 6 in or more |
Cross-check: another maker's current sizing guide puts counter-depth models at about 24 to 30 in deep and standard-depth models at about 30 to 37 in, and says counter-depth models are often slightly wider and taller.[5 · Oct 29, 2026]
Ranges restated from one major manufacturer's guide and a home-improvement reference.[1 3 2nd-hand · Oct 23, 2026] Standard kitchen counters are about 24 to 25 in deep: a 24 in base cabinet plus about 1 in of overhang.[1 3 2nd-hand · Oct 23, 2026]
"Depth" means four different things
Spec sheets often list several depth figures, and "counter-depth" models from different brands can differ by several inches depending on which one is quoted.[3 2nd-hand · Oct 23, 2026] One published KitchenAid counter-depth side-by-side example:[3 2nd-hand · Oct 23, 2026]
| Measured to | Depth (in) |
|---|---|
| Back of the case only (no doors) | 21¾ |
| Without doors | 23¾ |
| With doors | 26⅞ |
| With doors and handles | 29 9/16 |
Overall depths of models sold as counter-depth have been reported at about 27½ in (Whirlpool), 28¾ in (LG and Samsung) and 30¾ in (GE).[3 2nd-hand · Oct 23, 2026] Always compare the same type of measurement.
How to measure for one
- Measure your actual counter depth from the wall to the front edge. Thick tile backsplashes can reduce it by up to about an inch; decorative edges can add to it.[3 2nd-hand · Oct 23, 2026]
- Check the cutout width too. Counter-depth models are often wider than the standard model they replace, so confirm the opening between cabinets can take the extra width.[2 · Oct 23, 2026]
- Allow a gap behind the fridge; the installed depth is a little more than the box depth.[3 2nd-hand · Oct 23, 2026]
- Door swing: a standard model's depth can reach about 45 in with the door fully open.[1 · Oct 23, 2026] Next to a wall, the maker may require side clearance; Samsung's dimension sheet for one counter-depth French door model (RF23DB9700) calls for 3.75 in so the door opens 90° without the handle hitting the wall.[4 2nd-hand · Oct 29, 2026]
- Read the model's install guide for exact width, height (to top of hinge) and clearance numbers before you buy.
